Punjabi singer and actor Diljit Dosanjh has reportedly declined appeals to enter active politics in Punjab, with new information indicating that the artist is now a United States citizen. The development has drawn public attention given Dosanjh’s strong cultural association with Punjab and his repeated public expressions celebrating Punjabi identity through music, films, and international performances.
According to reports, Diljit Dosanjh acquired US citizenship in 2022 and has been traveling on a US passport since September 1 of that year. His last Indian passport was reportedly issued in Mumbai in 2018, while an earlier passport had been issued in Zambia. The revelation comes amid continued speculation over whether the singer would eventually enter Punjab’s political landscape following his increasing influence and popularity.
Dosanjh is widely recognized for his signature declaration “Main Hoon Punjab,” which has become closely associated with his public persona and artistic identity. The phrase has often been viewed as a reflection of his deep emotional and cultural connection to Punjab, despite his growing international presence and career expansion in global entertainment markets.

Reports also stated that Dosanjh’s spouse, Sandeep Kaur, is a US national. At the time of obtaining American citizenship, Dosanjh reportedly listed a residential address in an upscale California locality, where he is said to own a large five-bedroom bungalow spread across more than 3,000 square meters. The details have further highlighted the singer’s long-standing international ties and overseas lifestyle.
The issue has generated discussion online, particularly because foreign citizenship can carry implications for participation in Indian electoral politics under existing laws. While Dosanjh has not publicly linked his citizenship status to his decision to stay away from politics, observers note that the development provides additional context to his reported refusal to consider political roles in Punjab.
Despite the debate surrounding his citizenship, Diljit Dosanjh continues to remain one of the most influential figures in Punjabi entertainment and Indian popular culture. His music, films, and international tours have helped expand Punjabi representation globally, while his public image continues to resonate strongly with audiences in both India and the Punjabi diaspora abroad.
