West Indies looked to steady their innings after losing three wickets during the powerplay in the first T20I against India at the Bharat Ratna Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee Ekana Stadium in Lucknow. India, having won the toss and opted to bowl first, made early inroads through Arshdeep Singh and Axar Patel, putting the visitors under pressure in the opening six overs. However, captain Shai Hope and Sherfane Rutherford began rebuilding the innings after the early setbacks, with the pair looking to add valuable runs through the middle overs and prevent India's bowlers from maintaining complete control.
Arshdeep Singh provided India with their first breakthrough after producing a disciplined spell with the new ball. The left-arm pacer repeatedly attacked the stumps and found movement while maintaining an accurate line and length. He eventually dismissed debutant Kamil Pooran with a well-directed yorker that crashed into the stumps. Pooran's departure was followed quickly by another setback when Shimron Hetmyer was run out after sharp fielding from India captain Shreyas Iyer. Axar Patel then compounded West Indies' problems by clean bowling Rovman Powell, completing a double-wicket maiden and leaving the visitors three wickets down during the powerplay.
The early collapse forced West Indies to change their approach as Hope and Rutherford took responsibility for rebuilding the innings. Hope had already shown his aggressive intent earlier in the innings when he attacked Mayank Yadav, taking four boundaries from the fast bowler's opening over. Mayank conceded 16 runs in that over, giving West Indies a brief opportunity to recover some momentum. However, India quickly responded by bringing Axar Patel into the attack, and the spinner's wicket of Powell helped the hosts regain control. Mayank later returned for another over and improved considerably, conceding only eight runs.

Hope and Rutherford then began targeting the Indian spinners as they attempted to revive the West Indies innings. The pair attacked Kuldeep Yadav during one over, with both batters hitting a six as they looked to increase the scoring rate. Their developing partnership became particularly important because West Indies had lost three wickets for a relatively modest total and needed a substantial stand to prevent India from dominating the remainder of the innings. Hope's recent form against India also gave the visitors reason for optimism as he continued to look comfortable at the crease.
India have continued to use a varied bowling attack, with Arshdeep providing movement with the new ball and Axar and Kuldeep offering spin in the middle phase. The decision to bowl first was made with the conditions and potential dew in mind, while captain Shreyas Iyer will now want his bowlers to prevent the Hope-Rutherford partnership from becoming too damaging. Mayank's improved second over was also encouraging after his expensive opening spell. With the West Indies middle order containing several powerful hitters, India will be keen to take another wicket before the visitors can establish a strong platform.
The match has therefore moved into an important phase after India's dominant powerplay. West Indies have recovered from the loss of three early wickets, but they still need to accelerate while preserving wickets for the final overs. Hope and Rutherford's partnership will determine whether the visitors can turn a difficult start into a competitive first-innings total. India, meanwhile, will look to break the stand and bring their stronger middle-order bowling options into play as they attempt to restrict West Indies before the final five overs.
