India made an impressive start with the ball against West Indies in the opening T20I of the five-match series at the Bharat Ratna Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee Ekana Stadium in Lucknow. Having won the toss and chosen to bowl first, India quickly put pressure on the visitors during the powerplay. Arshdeep Singh and Axar Patel led the early attack as West Indies lost three wickets in a short period, leaving their batting lineup under pressure. The match is India's first T20I assignment after their gold-medal-winning campaign at the 2026 Asian Games.
Arshdeep Singh provided India with the first major breakthrough after producing a disciplined opening spell. The left-arm pacer consistently found movement and maintained an accurate line and length, repeatedly targeting the blockhole. His persistence eventually paid off when he bowled a precise yorker that crashed into the stumps of debutant Kamil Pooran. The dismissal ended West Indies' attempt to establish a stable start and gave India further control during the powerplay.
West Indies then suffered another setback when Shimron Hetmyer was run out following sharp fielding from India captain Shreyas Iyer. The wicket added to the pressure on the visitors, who were struggling to build partnerships against India's bowling attack. Hetmyer's dismissal came shortly after Arshdeep's breakthrough and left West Indies with another important batter back in the pavilion during the early stages of the innings.

Axar Patel then produced another significant blow in the same over by dismissing Rovman Powell. The West Indies batter attempted to play an aggressive shot against the spinner, but failed to make contact as the delivery went through and hit the stumps. The wicket completed a double-wicket maiden for Axar and further exposed the pressure on the West Indies batting order. India's bowlers had managed to combine disciplined lines with effective fielding to keep the visitors from gaining momentum.
Earlier, Shai Hope had provided West Indies with some attacking intent and looked to take advantage of India's pace bowling, including an over from Mayank Yadav. However, India's response through Arshdeep and Axar prevented the visitors from converting that early aggression into a strong platform. Mayank is returning to India's playing XI in this match, adding another pace option to the bowling attack. India have also opted not to include young batter Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, who had featured in both of the team's matches during the Asian Games.
The early wickets have given India a strong advantage as West Indies look to rebuild their innings and post a competitive total. India's decision to bowl first was influenced by the conditions and the possibility of chasing later in the evening, while West Indies captain Shai Hope had also indicated that he would have preferred to bowl first. With Arshdeep finding movement and Axar making an immediate impact, India will look to maintain the pressure through the middle overs, while West Indies will need a substantial partnership to recover from the powerplay setbacks.
