Tesla India has crossed the 1,000-unit sales milestone for the Model Y, its only model currently available in the Indian market, with cumulative deliveries reaching 1,017 units as of October 2, 2026. Data available on the Vahan portal indicates that the American electric vehicle maker has seen a marked improvement in sales after a relatively slow start in the country. The milestone comes a little over a year after Tesla entered the Indian market.
September 2026 emerged as Tesla India’s strongest sales month so far, with 291 Model Y units delivered during the month. The figure was more than 322 per cent higher than the 69 units sold in September 2025. Sales also rose sharply compared with August 2026, when Tesla delivered 117 units, marking an increase of nearly 149 per cent month-on-month.
Tesla’s sales remained largely in double digits between September 2025 and June 2026, with monthly deliveries ranging from 29 to 69 units. A significant improvement began in July, when 116 Model Ys were delivered compared with 38 units in June. Sales then reached 117 units in August before rising further to 291 units in September, with 554 vehicles delivered between July and October 2, accounting for about 54 per cent of Tesla’s cumulative Model Y sales in India.

The increase in sales has come alongside a price reduction for the Model Y Premium RWD variant. Tesla reduced its starting price by around Rs 9 lakh in May, bringing it to Rs 50.89 lakh. The Model Y is offered in Premium RWD and Model Y L Premium AWD versions, with the entry-level variant priced around Rs 11.1 lakh below the larger Model Y L.
The Model Y competes in India with electric SUVs including the Hyundai Ioniq 5, Kia EV6 and BYD Sealion 7. The Premium RWD uses a 64 kWh battery and a rear-mounted motor producing 299 hp and 420 Nm, with a claimed WLTP range of 500 km. The Model Y L features dual-motor all-wheel drive with 514 hp and 590 Nm, while Tesla has not disclosed its battery capacity for India.
September’s sales also strengthened Tesla’s position in India’s luxury EV market, where it moved into second place for the first time after recording 291 units. It overtook Mercedes-Benz India, which sold 125 electric vehicles during the month, while BMW India remained ahead with 502 EV sales. Tesla accounted for about 0.8 per cent of India’s overall electric passenger vehicle market in September, which recorded 35,995 retail sales.
