In a dramatic bust at Mughalsarai’s DDU Junction, a man was arrested Sunday evening on the Gurumukhi Express with Rs 29.67 lakh in cash. Mafijul Sheikh, hailing from West Bengal’s Birbhum district, was caught during a targeted operation by the Government Railway Police (GRP) and Railway Protection Force (RPF).
Acting on a tip-off about a large cash movement to West Bengal, GRP station in-charge Sunil Singh launched a special surveillance at Pandit Deendayal Upadhyay Railway Station. As the train pulled in, the team zeroed in on Sheikh in the general coach. A search revealed bundles of cash stuffed in his bag, totaling Rs 29.67 lakh, with no valid documentation to explain its source.
Sheikh admitted to boarding the train at Moradabad, claiming he was transporting the money to West Bengal. Preliminary investigations point to a possible hawala transaction, a method often used to move illicit funds. The cash has been handed over to the Income Tax Department for further scrutiny, and the investigation is ongoing to uncover the money’s origins and intended use.
