In a dramatic display of dissent, Congress MLAs, led by Leader of Opposition Umang Singhar, staged a vibrant protest on the Madhya Pradesh assembly premises on Monday, wielding toy chameleons to symbolize their accusation that the BJP-led state government is "changing its colours" on the critical issue of 27 per cent reservation for Other Backward Classes (OBCs). The protest, held in front of Mahatma Gandhi’s statue on the first day of the monsoon session, saw legislators raising slogans and accusing the government of betraying the OBC community.
Singhar, addressing the media, lambasted the BJP government for its inconsistent stance. "The government shifts its position like a chameleon on OBC reservation. Its policies lack clarity, and its intentions are dubious," he stated. He pointed out the government’s silence in the Supreme Court when pressed for answers, contrasted with its alleged tactic of making hollow promises to OBCs during election seasons to secure votes. "This is not just about reservation but about upholding social justice, equality, and constitutional rights," Singhar emphasized, vowing that the Congress would relentlessly champion the cause across all platforms.
Congress MLA and former minister Sachin Yadav echoed Singhar’s sentiments, accusing the BJP of duplicity. "In the assembly, they pose as OBC supporters, but their actions strip away the community’s rights," Yadav said, holding up a toy chameleon to underscore the government’s shifting narrative. He claimed the BJP has consistently failed to honor the OBC quota, unlike the Congress, which, he noted, introduced a 14 per cent reservation in 1994 and proposed increasing it to 27 per cent in 2003.

The Congress has long demanded the implementation of the 27 per cent OBC quota, alleging that the BJP, since assuming power, has stalled progress on this front. Party leaders argue that the reservation is essential for ensuring equitable representation and opportunities for OBCs in Madhya Pradesh. Monday’s protest, marked by the symbolic use of chameleons, aimed to draw public attention to what the Congress calls a deliberate betrayal by the ruling party.
