India will look to take a 2-0 lead in the five-match T20I series against the West Indies when the teams meet in Ranchi on Friday, but the hosts face a selection dilemma at the top of the order with Sanju Samson struggling for runs and teenager Vaibhav Sooryavanshi pushing for another opportunity. India's batting line-up has otherwise been in strong form, with the middle order producing enough firepower to cover for Samson's recent failures. However, his lean patch has once again raised the possibility of pairing Sooryavanshi with Abhishek Sharma at the top, potentially leaving Samson out of the opening combination.
Samson's last four T20I innings read 9, 7, 2 and 11, a sequence that has left him searching for consistency despite the team's recent success. His partnerships in those four matches have also yielded limited returns, with stands of 7, 12, 2 and 29. Two of those partnerships came when Sooryavanshi opened alongside Samson, giving the teenager an early opportunity to demonstrate his ability at the international level. With India already leading the series, the team management could be tempted to make a change that gives Sooryavanshi another chance while allowing Abhishek to continue in his familiar role at the top of the order.
Sooryavanshi's case is strengthened by the manner in which he has approached T20 cricket since breaking into the senior setup. The young left-hander has displayed an unusually broad range of attacking strokes and the confidence to take on bowlers from the outset. His ability to manufacture boundaries through unconventional shots has made him an intriguing option in India's already aggressive batting unit. Although his opportunities at international level have been limited, his performances have suggested that the format suits his natural game. Another appearance would allow India to assess whether his attacking approach can translate into a sustained role alongside Abhishek at the top of the order.

At the same time, India's management has so far shown faith in the established opening combination of Abhishek and Samson. Replacing Samson after a relatively short run of low scores would represent a significant selection decision, particularly with the wicketkeeper-batter having previously demonstrated his ability to produce match-winning innings in T20 cricket. India also have to consider the balance of the side and the roles players have been assigned in the middle order. Samson's experience and ability to accelerate can be valuable, while Sooryavanshi's left-handed batting offers a different dimension. The decision is therefore not simply about current form but also about how India want to structure their batting unit ahead of the longer-term T20I calendar.
The pressure on Samson has been partially eased by the form of India's middle order. Captain Shreyas Iyer has emerged as a major contributor since taking charge and has appeared increasingly comfortable in the leadership role. Iyer's recent performances have added stability to a batting line-up that has been able to absorb failures at the top. He also recently registered his maiden T20I century in his 68th appearance in the format, underlining his importance to India's middle-order plans. With Iyer and the other batters producing consistently, India have been able to remain competitive even when Samson has not contributed significantly, but the team management will be aware that relying on the middle order to repeatedly compensate for top-order failures is not an ideal long-term strategy.
Friday's contest therefore carries an additional subplot beyond India's attempt to strengthen their series advantage. A victory would put the hosts 2-0 ahead and give them significant control of the five-match series, but the selection decision surrounding Samson and Sooryavanshi could attract almost as much attention. India have the luxury of a strong batting group and several players capable of changing a game quickly, yet that depth also creates difficult choices for the management. Samson will be keen to convert his next opportunity into a substantial score and silence questions about his place, while Sooryavanshi will hope another chance arrives after showing glimpses of his considerable potential. The final decision will indicate whether India continue backing experience and continuity or choose to further explore the teenage batter's explosive potential.
