A video circulating on social media has triggered a debate over New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani’s activities on the third anniversary of the October 7, 2023, Hamas attack on Israel. The video, shared on X, is being circulated with the claim that Mamdani was seen dining at Hinds Hall, described by social media users as a Palestinian restaurant on Manhattan’s Upper West Side, on October 7. Critics accused the mayor of making a political statement by visiting the restaurant on a day marked by memorial events for the victims of the Hamas attack. The claims surrounding the video have gained attention amid renewed scrutiny of Mamdani’s comments on the Israel-Gaza conflict.
Posts accompanying the video questioned Mamdani’s decision to visit the restaurant on the anniversary, with some users describing the timing as significant. Conservative commentator Laura Loomer reposted the video and called the visit “disgusting”, while journalist Olivia Reingold described it as Mamdani’s way of commemorating October 7. Other social media users defended the mayor, arguing that eating at a Palestinian restaurant does not in itself establish a political message and that people can visit restaurants regardless of their cuisine or the date. The competing reactions have contributed to the online controversy surrounding the video.
Mamdani had separately issued a public statement on October 7 acknowledging the Hamas attack and the deaths and abductions that followed. He described the day as “profoundly painful” for many New Yorkers and said Hamas had killed more than 1,100 Israelis and abducted 251 people. He said he mourned with people who continued to carry the loss from the attack. Mamdani then broadened his statement to discuss the subsequent war in Gaza, describing the Israeli military campaign in strongly critical terms and arguing that Palestinian suffering also needed to be recognised. His statement itself became a source of political criticism from Jewish organisations and other opponents.

The mayor also attended an October 7 vigil in New York City marking the anniversary of the attack. Reuters footage showed Mamdani leaving a vigil in Union Square amid jeers from pro-Palestinian protesters. The event was organised by Israelis for Peace and was intended to commemorate the victims of the October 7 attack. Mamdani’s appearance at the vigil came as he faced criticism from different sides over how he has addressed the Israel-Gaza conflict. The mayor has attempted to acknowledge the suffering of Israeli victims of the Hamas attack while also highlighting Palestinian casualties and the humanitarian consequences of the war.
The restaurant video emerged against that broader political backdrop. Mamdani has faced criticism from Jewish organisations and pro-Israel figures over his statements concerning Israel, while some pro-Palestinian activists have also criticised him for positions they believe do not go far enough. His October 7 statement drew criticism from both directions, with some Democrats and Jewish groups arguing that his focus on Israel’s subsequent military actions diverted attention from the victims of the Hamas attack. Meanwhile, voices on the pro-Palestinian left have questioned other aspects of his approach to the conflict.
The viral video has therefore become part of a wider debate over how Mamdani, as New York City mayor, addresses one of the most divisive international issues affecting the city’s communities. New York has large Jewish and Palestinian populations, making statements and public appearances related to the conflict particularly sensitive. While the social-media posts have interpreted the restaurant visit as a political gesture, the video itself does not establish the mayor’s intention in visiting the establishment. The controversy comes as Mamdani continues to face scrutiny over his handling of October 7 commemorations and his public position on the Israel-Gaza conflict.
