Cristiano Ronaldo could face a suspension of up to six months from the Portugal national team after leaving the squad’s training camp without permission last week. The Portuguese Football Federation’s disciplinary regulations allow for a ban ranging from one to six months when a player leaves or misses a national team activity without an accepted justification. A fine can also be imposed on professional players.
The 41-year-old forward left Portugal’s camp in Copenhagen on September 30, shortly before the team’s Nations League fixture against Denmark. His departure followed a disagreement with coach Jorge Jesus after Ronaldo was left on the bench during Portugal’s 2-1 win over Norway. Ronaldo later explained that he had been frustrated after an understanding over his playing time was not followed.
Ronaldo has since accepted responsibility for leaving the camp and apologised to his teammates and Portuguese supporters. In a statement released on October 6, he said the Portuguese federation should assess his actions and impose the appropriate punishment, adding that he did not expect special treatment because of his status as captain and the team’s record goalscorer.

However, one factor could work in Ronaldo’s favour when the federation determines the final punishment. His subsequent explanation, apology and willingness to accept disciplinary action could be considered during the process, while the circumstances surrounding his departure may also be examined. The regulations provide a range rather than automatically imposing the maximum six-month suspension.
Ronaldo has also made clear that he does not consider the episode the end of his international career. He said he would remain available for Portugal after serving whatever suspension is ultimately imposed, provided he is physically fit and performing for his club. The forward remains focused on competing for the national team rather than treating his next appearance as a farewell.
The dispute has also reopened questions over Ronaldo’s relationship with Jesus, who has maintained that the decision over playing time rests with the coach. Despite the controversy, the door remains open for Ronaldo to return to Portugal once the disciplinary matter is resolved, leaving his international future dependent on both the federation’s decision and his continued fitness.
