Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) campaign General Secretary Aadhav Arjuna has blamed the police for the chaos that led to the tragic stampede during a party event in Karur, calling it the biggest mistake to have “trusted the police.” Addressing the incident that left several people injured, Arjuna claimed that the police mishandled the situation and even attempted to use it for political advantage.
Speaking to reporters, Arjuna said the TVK delegation, led by Party Chief Vijay, faced an “unusual welcome” from local authorities upon arrival in Karur. “The police escorted us for about two kilometers, stopped our bus, and asked our leader to speak there. Our leader, unaware of any conspiracy politics, thanked the police. If plotting conspiracies is what constitutes experienced politics, we prefer to remain truthful to the people,” Arjuna remarked.
Arjuna alleged that soon after Vijay left the venue, the police carried out a continuous lathi charge on people carrying TVK flags, worsening the chaos. He claimed that his party had applied for permission to hold the meeting eight days in advance, selecting the Central Lighthouse Roundana as the venue. However, the police, he said, refused the location and forced the event to be conducted in Velusamypuram, a site he called less accessible and unsafe for large gatherings.

Accusing the authorities of negligence, Arjuna said the inadequate police deployment at the rally was deliberate. “If anything happened, they could make it political and tarnish our party’s image,” he alleged. The TVK leader maintained that despite repeated requests, the administration did not provide sufficient support to manage the crowd or ensure safety. He said the party would not be deterred and would continue its outreach efforts across Tamil Nadu with greater vigilance.
Explaining why TVK founder Vijay met the victims in Mahabalipuram instead of Karur, Arjuna said the police had denied them a suitable venue in the district. “They allotted a distant marriage hall that could not accommodate the victims and families appropriately,” he explained, calling the move another instance of obstruction. The party has urged the State Government to hold an impartial inquiry into the Karur incident and take strict action against those responsible.
