President Donald Trump announced a U.S.-Israel partnership to establish new food distribution centers in Gaza to address the dire humanitarian crisis, but the lack of clear details has raised questions. Speaking aboard Air Force One after returning from Scotland, Trump stated that Israel would oversee the centers to ensure “proper distribution,” responding to images of starving children that he described as undeniable, publicly diverging from Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s stance denying starvation in Gaza. The White House called it a “new aid plan,” but State Department spokeswoman Tammy Bruce admitted uncertainty about its structure, awaiting Trump’s further clarification.
The announcement comes after the U.S. exited ceasefire talks in the 21-month Israel-Hamas war, citing Hamas’s bad faith. Over 40 Democratic senators urged Trump to resume talks and criticized the reliance on the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF), an Israeli-backed U.S. contractor operating four food sites since May, following Israel’s 2.5-month aid blockade. Senator Tim Kaine emphasized that established aid organizations with decades of experience should lead such efforts.
Located in Israeli military zones, GHF’s sites have drawn criticism, with the U.N. reporting hundreds of Palestinians killed by Israeli forces while seeking aid, though Israel and GHF claim only warning shots and pepper spray were used. The U.N. refuses cooperation, arguing the model endangers Palestinians and allows Israel to control aid, worsening displacement. Trump, referencing a recent conversation with Netanyahu, insisted Israel is committed to “proper” food distribution.

The plan has divided Trump’s supporters. Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene labeled Gaza’s crisis a “genocide,” echoing progressive Democrats, while podcaster Charlie Kirk rejected claims of deliberate starvation as propaganda. International pressure grows, with the U.K., France, and Germany demanding a ceasefire and aid access, as Gaza’s health ministry reported 14 starvation deaths in a single day. Trump’s shift, prompted by harrowing images, challenges his “America First” stance amid global calls for urgent action.
