The Maharashtra government has decided to introduce drug de-addiction lessons into the school curriculum as part of a broader effort to educate students about substance abuse and emerging social risks. The initiative seeks to build awareness from an early age and encourage children to make informed and responsible decisions.

Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis issued directions to the School Education Department during a review meeting held in Mumbai on Monday. The department has been asked to develop a proposal for including age-appropriate material on the dangers of drug use and the importance of preventing addiction within the existing education framework.

The curriculum initiative is expected to explain the physical, psychological and social consequences of substance abuse. According to the state government, students must be made aware of such dangers before they become vulnerable to harmful influences. Details about the classes covered, lesson structure and implementation schedule have not yet been announced.

Fadnavis also directed schools to establish Anti-Drug Guidance and Counselling Committees. These committees are expected to support awareness activities and provide guidance to students who may have questions or concerns related to substance use. The government has not yet disclosed the proposed composition, training requirements or responsibilities of committee members.

Alongside the curriculum changes, the state plans to implement a “Drug-Free School” campaign across Maharashtra. The programme is intended to promote safer educational environments through awareness and preventive measures. Lessons addressing cybercrime are also expected to form part of the government’s wider effort to prepare students for contemporary social and digital challenges.

The School Education Department will now be responsible for developing the proposal and determining how the subjects can be incorporated effectively into classroom learning. Further guidelines are expected to clarify teacher training, counselling arrangements and coordination with relevant agencies. The initiative reflects the government’s emphasis on prevention and early education as central elements of its response to drug abuse.
