Veteran educationist and former governor Dr D Y Patil died in Kolhapur on Tuesday morning, prompting tributes from political leaders, academics and members of the institutions he helped establish. His son, Congress MLC Satej Patil, announced that his father died at 11:08 a.m. at the age of 91.
Describing the loss as deeply personal, Satej Patil said the strongest pillar of the family’s life had fallen. He remembered his father as his greatest source of support and said the veteran leader had devoted his entire life to social service, education and the welfare of people from disadvantaged sections of society.
“My father, Padmashri Dr D Y Patil, passed away today at 11:08 am in Kolhapur,” Satej Patil said. He described him as a principled individual and a true patriot who always placed the country first. He added that his father worked to make education accessible to people at the lowest levels of society.

D Y Patil began his public career as a grassroots worker before rising to significant political and constitutional responsibilities. He was elected twice as a member of the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly and later served as governor of different states. His journey reflected decades of involvement in politics, public administration and social development.
Beyond politics, Patil became widely recognised for his contributions to education and institution-building. Educational organisations associated with his name expanded across multiple disciplines, including engineering, medicine and higher education. His work helped create academic opportunities for generations of students and established him as an influential figure within Maharashtra’s education sector.
In recognition of his contribution to education and social service, D Y Patil received the Padma Shri in 1991. Maharashtra’s chief minister, leaders from several political parties and prominent educationists joined his family in mourning his death. Their tributes highlighted a legacy shaped by public service, educational development and a long-standing commitment to expanding access to learning.
