External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar visited the National Historical Museum in Sofia on Wednesday as part of his official visit to Bulgaria, underscoring the growing engagement between India and the Balkan nation. The visit highlighted the cultural dimension of India-Bulgaria relations while providing an opportunity for the minister to explore Bulgaria’s rich historical legacy and heritage.
Sharing details of his visit on social media, Jaishankar said he toured the museum’s extensive collection of artifacts spanning several millennia. He noted that the visit offered a deeper understanding of Bulgaria’s efforts to preserve its diverse cultural and historical traditions. The National Historical Museum, one of Bulgaria’s most significant cultural institutions, houses a vast collection reflecting the country’s evolution through ancient, medieval, and modern periods.
Earlier in the day, Jaishankar arrived in Sofia for official discussions aimed at strengthening bilateral cooperation. During his stay, he is scheduled to hold talks with Bulgaria’s foreign minister and other senior leaders. The discussions are expected to focus on expanding cooperation in areas such as trade, investment, technology, education, and people-to-people exchanges, while also reviewing regional and global developments of mutual interest.

The Indian Embassy in Bulgaria welcomed the minister upon his arrival. In a message posted on social media, the embassy said Jaishankar was received by India’s Ambassador to Bulgaria, Arun Kumar Sahu, along with Bulgarian officials led by Director General Petko Doykov. The visit reflects the continued efforts of both countries to deepen diplomatic engagement and explore new avenues of collaboration.
Following the completion of his engagements in Bulgaria, Jaishankar is scheduled to travel to Finland to participate in the 14th edition of the Kultaranta Talks. The conference, themed “A World in Transition: Global, Regional and Local Perspectives,” will bring together policymakers and experts to discuss major international challenges. The minister is also expected to hold meetings with Finnish leaders during the visit.
India and Bulgaria share longstanding and friendly relations that predate the establishment of formal diplomatic ties in 1954. Over the decades, the two countries have maintained close cooperation across multiple sectors despite significant political changes globally. According to the Ministry of External Affairs, the relationship has steadily evolved through mutual understanding, cultural exchanges, and sustained diplomatic engagement, forming a strong foundation for future cooperation between the two nations.
