The Maharashtra government has doubled the subsidy available under its Pink E-Auto Scheme from 20% to 40%, providing additional financial support to women seeking livelihood opportunities in the transport sector. The initiative is also intended to promote the adoption of electric vehicles and strengthen clean urban mobility across the state. The revised subsidy is expected to reduce the initial financial burden associated with purchasing an electric autorickshaw.

The enhanced assistance was announced through a recently issued Government Resolution. Under the revised arrangement, the state government will cover 40% of the eligible vehicle cost, compared with the 20% subsidy offered earlier. The change represents a significant expansion of government support for women beneficiaries and is aimed at making ownership of electric autorickshaws more financially accessible.

Women who received Pink E-Rickshaws under the previous version of the scheme will also be eligible for the additional 20% subsidy. The retrospective benefit is intended to help existing beneficiaries repay loans taken to purchase their vehicles. This provision ensures that women who joined the programme earlier are not placed at a financial disadvantage following the introduction of the higher subsidy.

The Government Resolution has also revised the scheme’s funding structure. Beneficiaries will be required to contribute a minimum of 10% of the vehicle’s cost, while the remaining amount can be covered through a bank loan. Alternatively, vehicle suppliers may provide an interest-free deferred-payment facility, potentially offering beneficiaries greater flexibility in financing their electric autorickshaws.

Pune-based non-governmental organisations Parisar and Asar welcomed the government’s decision, describing the increased subsidy as a positive step. However, experts associated with the organisations said important gaps within the scheme still need to be addressed for the initiative to achieve its objectives. The available information did not specify all the additional reforms being sought by the organisations.

The Pink E-Auto Scheme combines two policy goals: expanding income-generating opportunities for women and encouraging a transition towards cleaner transportation. The higher subsidy could improve access by reducing purchase costs, but the programme’s wider success will also depend on effective implementation, financing access and support for beneficiaries. Further operational guidelines are expected to clarify how eligible women can claim the revised subsidy and how the additional assistance will be provided to existing recipients.
