Google’s latest budget smartphone, the Pixel 10a, takes a refreshing approach to design by eliminating the traditional camera bump, creating a flat phone that rests completely on surfaces. The move departs from the trend of protruding camera modules, which, while improving photography, often compromise usability. Beyond this, the Pixel 10a largely mirrors its predecessor, the Pixel 9a, with subtle updates in display brightness and battery capacity.
The phone features a 6.3-inch Actua display capable of 3,000 nits brightness, making it easier to use in bright conditions. While it supports a 120Hz refresh rate, the device ships with 60Hz enabled by default. Design-wise, Google offers the Pixel 10a in Black, Lavender, Berry, and Fog, but retains a plastic back rather than the glass used in the higher-end Pixel 10, which comes with Corning Gorilla Glass Victus 2. The budget device has a slightly larger 5,100 mAh battery, compared with 4,970 mAh on the base Pixel 10, and charges at 10W wireless and 30W wired.
Performance remains powered by the Google Tensor G4 chip paired with 8GB of RAM, the same as the Pixel 9a. This means certain AI-driven features, such as the updated Gemini Nano model, notification summaries, Magic Cue, call notes, and on-device call translation, are unavailable. Despite these limitations, the device handles daily apps, video streaming, and light gaming effectively, with the brighter display enhancing usability in varied lighting.

Camera capabilities are similar to last year’s model, with a 48-megapixel main sensor and 13-megapixel wide-angle lens. The main camera performs well across most conditions, including low light, but the wide-angle lens loses detail and lacks autofocus. Google includes AI features such as Camera Coach for framing guidance and Auto Best Take for composite group photos. Zoom is limited to 8x super-res, compared with up to 100x on the Pixel 10. Some AI enhancements may arrive via future Pixel Drop updates.
Software support is a standout, with seven years of updates covering the OS, security patches, and feature drops. New capabilities include Quick Share compatibility with Apple’s AirDrop, enabling seamless photo transfers to Macs. This long-term support complements the Pixel 10a’s flat design, solid battery, and bright display to make it a compelling choice for budget-conscious users.
Priced at $499, the Pixel 10a offers good value for money with a comfortable flat form factor, reliable battery life, and display improvements. However, owners of the Pixel 9a will find limited reasons to upgrade, and competitors like the Nothing Phone 4a Pro at the same price point present stronger specifications, including a larger screen, Qualcomm processor, telephoto lens, and faster 50W charging.
