Several women beneficiaries became emotional after meeting Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta at the Delhi Assembly on Monday, as the government distributed bicycles to students under the Vidya Vahini Yojana. The initiative is aimed at supporting girls’ education, improving mobility and strengthening their confidence and independence.
Addressing reporters, Gupta emphasised the Delhi government’s focus on the safety, dignity, healthcare and overall well-being of girls and women. She noted that the government wants to strengthen the self-confidence of Delhi’s daughters and create conditions that enable them to move forward with greater independence.
Under the Vidya Vahini Yojana, bicycles were distributed to students, with the initiative linked to efforts to improve access to education and encourage regular school attendance among girls. Gupta noted that the government intends to provide bicycles to girls as they reach Class 9, with the objective of making it easier for them to travel to school and continue their education.

The Chief Minister also referred to the government’s broader focus on women’s empowerment and financial independence. She mentioned the Lakhpati Yojana and other schemes aimed at supporting girls and women, stressing that empowerment should begin from childhood and continue as girls progress through different stages of life.
Meanwhile, BJP workers staged protests against the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), alleging that its leaders and MLAs were attempting to obstruct the implementation of the Lakshmi Yojana. A separate demonstration was held outside the office of Leader of Opposition Atishi and was led by former BJP MP Ramesh Bidhuri.
BJP leader Harish Oberoi claimed that women had gathered outside the residences and offices of AAP legislators to express their dissatisfaction. He alleged that AAP MLAs opposed the Lakshmi Yojana during its discussion in the Delhi Assembly and subsequently walked out of the House. The BJP has maintained that the scheme, under which women are to receive Rs 2,500, is part of its broader women-focused welfare agenda.
