The national capital has crossed its average monthly rainfall for August within the first eight days of the month, with the Safdarjung Observatory recording 230.1 mm of rain so far. Delhi has also been witnessing rainfall for the fourth consecutive day, marking a notably wet start to the month and pushing the city's rainfall total above its long-term August average.
Safdarjung, Delhi's primary weather observatory, recorded 225.7 mm of rainfall from the beginning of August until 8.30 am on Saturday. Another 4.4 mm of rain was recorded between 8.30 am and 5.30 pm the same day, taking the cumulative rainfall for the month to 230.1 mm.
According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), Delhi's mean total rainfall for August is 226.8 mm based on the 1991-2020 climatological period. The rainfall recorded during the first eight days has therefore already exceeded the city's average monthly August rainfall, with 3.3 mm more rain recorded than the long-term benchmark.

The capital also recorded its wettest August day in two years on Saturday, with Safdarjung receiving 98.7 mm of rainfall in the 24 hours ending at 8.30 am. The previous occasion when Delhi received more rain on an August day was August 1, 2024, when the observatory recorded 107.6 mm of rainfall.
The continuing spell has contributed significantly to the rapid increase in Delhi's rainfall total during the opening days of August. With rain reported for four consecutive days, the capital has experienced sustained precipitation rather than an isolated shower, helping the monthly figure cross the normal August benchmark much earlier in the month. The IMD has forecast light to very light rain at some places in Delhi over the next two days. Further showers during this period could add to the month's rainfall total, as the capital continues to experience a wetter-than-average start to August.
