British Airways flight BA295, travelling from London to Chicago, declared an emergency while flying over Ireland and began diverting back towards London, according to flight-tracking data. The aircraft was transmitting the transponder code 7700, which is used internationally to alert air traffic control to a general emergency requiring assistance.
The aircraft descended rapidly to around 9,000 feet while over Ireland, according to the tracking data. The reason for the emergency has not been publicly disclosed so far. A controlled descent to a lower altitude can be associated with a range of situations, including cabin depressurisation, but the available information does not establish the cause of the incident.
Squawk 7700 is a four-digit transponder code used by aircraft crews to communicate a general emergency to air traffic controllers. The code does not identify the specific nature of the problem. Once activated, it alerts controllers that the aircraft requires assistance and allows them to provide appropriate routing and priority as necessary.

The incident comes days after a separate emergency involving flydubai flight FZ1073, which was travelling towards Tel Aviv before diverting to Tabuk in Saudi Arabia on September 30. That aircraft also transmitted an emergency squawk code and underwent a rapid descent. The incident later drew international attention after an alleged attack involving the aircraft's co-pilot and captain.
Flight FZ1073 was carrying 174 passengers, including children, when it was diverted to Prince Sultan Bin Abdel Aziz Airport in Tabuk. The captain, Smit Machchhar, was subsequently praised publicly after the incident. The British Airways emergency is unrelated to that episode, and no information has indicated a similar security situation aboard BA295.
Further details about the British Airways flight, including the reason for the emergency and the aircraft's condition, are expected once the airline or relevant aviation authorities provide an official update. The flight's diversion and emergency declaration remain subject to confirmation from the airline.
