A massive fire broke out at the Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport (BEST) undertaking’s Anik depot yard in Central Mumbai on Monday evening, with several buses catching fire. The incident occurred at around 5:45 pm, according to a BEST spokesperson. Thick black smoke rising from the depot was visible from a considerable distance.
At least 10 buses have been reported burnt in the fire. All the affected vehicles were wet-leased Midi CNG buses operating under the BEST undertaking. Videos and visuals circulating on social media showed flames engulfing the buses, with large clouds of black smoke rising from the depot.
Eyewitnesses at the location reported hearing blasts as the fire spread through the buses. The sounds and heavy smoke prompted an immediate emergency response, with fire department personnel rushing to the depot to contain the blaze. Firefighters began operations to prevent the flames from spreading to other vehicles and areas within the depot.

The fire has since been brought under control, and there have been no reports of injuries so far. Authorities and emergency personnel were involved in the response as efforts were undertaken to fully secure the affected area. The incident caused a significant disruption at the depot as the damaged buses were assessed.
The cause of the fire has not yet been established. Officials are expected to examine the affected buses and the depot area to determine how the blaze started and whether any mechanical or other factors contributed to the incident. Further details are awaited as the assessment continues.
