Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday called on Indians to prioritize locally made goods to bolster the economy amid global uncertainties, days after US President Donald Trump imposed a 25% tariff on Indian exports. Speaking at a rally in Uttar Pradesh, Modi emphasized the need to shield India’s economic interests without directly referencing the US measures, which also include higher duties on several nations, raising fears of global market volatility.
“The world economy faces instability and apprehensions,” Modi said. “Our mantra should be to buy only what is made by Indian hands, crafted with our sweat.” The appeal aligns with his “Make in India” campaign, now gaining urgency as Trump criticized India’s high tariffs and threatened further penalties over its energy and defense ties with Russia.
Modi highlighted the importance of supporting local farmers, small industries, and youth employment to strengthen India’s economic resilience. “When other nations prioritize their interests, India must remain vigilant,” he told the crowd. Analysts see the push as a strategy to reduce reliance on imports and mitigate the impact of US tariffs, which could disrupt India’s $120 billion export market to the US, particularly in textiles, pharmaceuticals, and IT services.
