Jan Suraaj founder Prashant Kishor won the Bankipur Assembly by-election on Monday, defeating BJP candidate Neeraj Kumar Sinha by 18,963 votes to secure his first electoral victory and end the BJP's long-standing hold over the constituency. The result is being seen as a significant political development in Bihar ahead of future electoral contests.

According to the Election Commission, Kishor secured 63,203 votes after the completion of all 31 rounds of counting, while BJP candidate Neeraj Kumar Sinha polled 44,250 votes. RJD candidate Rekha Kumari Gupta finished third with 14,085 votes. Kishor maintained a consistent lead throughout the counting process and steadily widened the margin over his rivals.

Bihar Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary congratulated Kishor on his victory, saying the people of Bankipur had delivered their verdict in the "great festival of democracy". In a post on X, he extended his best wishes to the Jan Suraaj leader and said the mandate of the electorate should be respected.

The by-election, initially expected to witness a close triangular contest between Jan Suraaj, the BJP and the RJD, ultimately resulted in a comfortable victory for Kishor. As counting progressed, the focus shifted from the battle for victory to the contest for second place, with the BJP retaining the runner-up position while the RJD remained a distant third.

The outcome is considered a setback for the BJP, as Bankipur has traditionally been regarded as one of its strongholds. In the 2025 Bihar Assembly election, BJP leader Nitin Nabin had won the seat by a margin of around 51,000 votes over the RJD candidate. However, the party was unable to retain the constituency in the by-election.

Political observers believe the result could trigger introspection within both the BJP and the RJD, while providing a significant boost to Prashant Kishor and the Jan Suraaj party. The victory is expected to strengthen the party's position in Bihar politics, with a clearer picture of the voting shift likely to emerge after a detailed analysis of booth-wise results.
