A 36-year-old Pakistani undertrial prisoner died at the high-security Central Jail in Jammu on Sunday, with officials indicating that the death was being treated as a suspected suicide. The prisoner was identified as Shahid Imran, a resident of Sargodha in Pakistan’s Punjab province. He had been lodged at Kot Bhalwal Jail after being arrested near the International Border in Jammu in October 2024.
According to officials, Imran was found unconscious inside his cell before being taken to Government Medical College hospital in Jammu for treatment. Doctors at the hospital subsequently declared him dead. Officials said a preliminary inquiry into the circumstances indicated that the prisoner may have taken his own life, while further legal and procedural steps are expected to establish the circumstances surrounding the death.
The prisoner had been in custody since his arrest in the Makwal sector of Jammu, where authorities took him into custody in October 2024. He was subsequently lodged at Kot Bhalwal Jail, a high-security prison facility in Jammu. Officials have not indicated any broader security incident linked to his death, and the case remains subject to the required inquiry and post-mortem procedures.

The death comes amid continued scrutiny of the treatment and welfare of prisoners held in custody, particularly in cases involving foreign nationals. Officials said the body was moved to the mortuary for post-mortem examination.
