A communication gap between the BCCI's Centre of Excellence (CoE) and the senior men's selection committee has come under scrutiny following the unavailability of fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah for the upcoming Test series against Sri Lanka. The issue has raised questions over injury management, rehabilitation timelines and coordination between the medical staff and selectors.
According to reports, the national selection committee was initially informed that Bumrah would be available for the Test series beginning on August 15. However, it later emerged that the pacer's injury was more serious than first assessed, forcing him out of contention. The development reportedly prompted a virtual meeting involving CoE Head of Cricket VVS Laxman, selection committee chairman Ajit Agarkar and other senior officials to discuss the management of injuries involving centrally contracted players.
The spotlight has also turned towards the functioning of the CoE's sports science department, which has been operating without a permanent head since the departure of Nitin Patel. Interim head of sports science Dhananjay Kaushik is currently overseeing operations at the Bengaluru-based high-performance centre, with questions being raised over rehabilitation plans, fitness assessments and adherence to return-to-play protocols.

Reports have also highlighted concerns over the handling of injuries involving players such as Harshit Rana, Washington Sundar and Nitish Kumar Reddy. These cases have fuelled debate over whether rehabilitation programmes, workload management and fitness monitoring are being implemented consistently, particularly for players recovering from recurring injuries.
The review has also extended to India team physio Kamlesh Jain, whose role is reportedly under evaluation amid the recent spate of injuries within the national side. Jain has been associated with the Indian team for nearly five years after previously serving with the National Cricket Academy and India A setup.
A comprehensive review meeting involving head coach Gautam Gambhir, chairman of selectors Ajit Agarkar, CoE Head of Cricket VVS Laxman and BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia is expected to examine the team's injury management systems and overall performance following the England series. It remains unclear whether the meeting will be held in person or virtually, as Gambhir is currently scheduled to be with the team during the Sri Lanka tour.
