The North Eastern Council (NEC) announced the release of Rs 11.31 crore in July to support a wide array of development initiatives across the Northeastern region, with a particular emphasis on Meghalaya and Sikkim. The funds, disbursed to various central and regional agencies, target critical sectors such as agriculture, tourism, health infrastructure, human resource development, and cultural preservation, aiming to foster economic growth and enhance regional infrastructure.
Among the key allocations, Rs 2.09 crore has been dedicated to establishing Kiwi orchards, while Rs 1.81 crore will promote commercial bamboo plantations. Food processing units in Assam, Manipur, and Meghalaya received Rs 1.28 crore, and Rs 1.18 crore was allocated for a Banana tissue culture facility. Additionally, Rs 94 lakh will empower marginalized women in Sixth Schedule Areas through life skill education, and Rs 80 lakh will support Agarwood plantations.
Research and documentation of the Kokborok language and literature received Rs 83.75 lakh, while Rs 74.85 lakh was allocated for integrated Arecanut and Turmeric plantations. The promotion of Avocado, Persimmon, and Blueberry orchards was granted Rs 49.90 lakh, and Rs 94.03 lakh will fund stabilized interlocking block-making enterprises. Furthermore, Rs 17.58 lakh was disbursed under the NEC Merit Scholarship scheme to support educational opportunities.
In Meghalaya specifically, the NEC allocated Rs 3.21 crore for targeted projects. This includes Rs 1.46 crore for constructing patient lodging and staff quarters at Mawdiangdiang near NEIGRIHMS, Rs 1.30 crore for an indoor stadium in Jongksha, and Rs 44.32 lakh for essential services in Mawshynrut block of West Khasi Hills district.
The NEC also highlighted significant advancements in Meghalaya’s tourism sector during the first quarter of the 2025-26 financial year. A major project includes the development of tourism infrastructure at Laitlyngkot (Lamlyer) in East Khasi Hills, featuring a comprehensive tourist resort with a spa, adventure activities, a children’s playground, approach roads, and beautification efforts. Additionally, the Tea Boutique and Eco-tourist lodge at Umsning in Ri-Bhoi district, completed on June 13, 2025, aims to promote tea growers, create employment for local youth, and serve as an educational and marketing hub for tea while accommodating tourists.

The NEC emphasized its commitment to timely fund disbursement and effective project implementation to ensure sustainable development across the Northeast. These initiatives reflect a strategic focus on enhancing economic opportunities, preserving cultural heritage, and strengthening infrastructure, positioning the region for long-term growth and prosperity.
