Supporters of the Trinamool Congress and the Bharatiya Janata Party clashed in parts of South 24 Parganas district on Saturday as repolling was conducted at 15 booths, prompting heightened security deployment and intervention by authorities.
The violence was reported from multiple locations where voters returned to cast their ballots following the Election Commission’s decision to order repolling due to alleged irregularities during the earlier phase. Eyewitness accounts indicated that confrontations broke out between rival party supporters, leading to tense scenes and disruption near polling stations.
According to officials, security personnel were deployed in large numbers to ensure the repolling process proceeded without further incidents. Central forces and state police were seen conducting route marches and maintaining strict vigil in sensitive areas to prevent escalation and ensure voter safety.

The repolling exercise was ordered after complaints of electoral malpractices, including allegations of intimidation and procedural violations, surfaced during the initial voting. Authorities said the decision aimed to uphold the integrity of the electoral process and provide voters with a fair opportunity to exercise their franchise.
Political tensions remained high throughout the day, with both parties trading allegations over responsibility for the clashes. Leaders from the Trinamool Congress and the BJP accused each other of attempting to influence the outcome through disruption and violence, reflecting the deeply polarised political environment in the state.
Despite the unrest, election officials maintained that voting continued under close supervision and that necessary steps were taken to restore order swiftly. The developments underscore the challenges faced in conducting peaceful elections in politically sensitive regions, particularly during repolling exercises.
