A video showing students of Indian Institute of Technology Jodhpur chasing a water tanker amid a drinking water shortage has sparked concern over basic infrastructure at the premier institute. The issue came to light after visuals went viral on social media, capturing students running behind a tanker to collect water. The scenes highlighted the severity of the situation, with students appearing to struggle for access to something as fundamental as drinking water.
Responding to the incident, IIT Jodhpur Director Avinash Kumar Agarwal acknowledged the problem and said the institute does not have a regular supply of clean water. He noted that the campus relies on rural water supply, unlike other central institutions in Rajasthan, which typically have more stable infrastructure.
The situation worsened after a machine at a pumping station was damaged due to voltage fluctuations, disrupting water supply for nearly two days. During such breakdowns, the institute is forced to arrange water from nearby sources, including Surpura village, to meet daily needs.

Officials said staff worked for nearly 30 hours to restore the system, but the incident has raised broader concerns about long-term water security on campus. The director described it as a major issue and stressed the need for systemic solutions rather than temporary fixes.
He added that the institute plans to raise the matter with the state government, seeking a dedicated pipeline to ensure uninterrupted water supply. The move is aimed at preventing recurring disruptions and ensuring that students and faculty do not continue to face such basic hardships.
