The Goa government has identified large eco-sensitive zones along the Mandovi River and the Zuari River, a move aimed at strengthening environmental protection and regulating development in ecologically fragile areas.
Officials said the demarcation covers stretches along both rivers where biodiversity is rich and human activity needs closer monitoring. These zones are expected to place restrictions on construction, industrial operations, and other activities that could adversely affect river ecosystems and surrounding habitats.
The decision comes amid growing concerns over environmental degradation in Goa, including pollution, unregulated tourism, and pressure from infrastructure projects. The Mandovi and Zuari rivers are vital to the state’s ecology and economy, supporting fisheries, mangroves, and serving as key water resources.

Authorities indicated that the identification of eco-sensitive zones will help create a more structured framework for conservation while allowing sustainable development. The plan is likely to involve coordination between multiple departments, including environment, forest, and urban planning authorities.
Environmental experts have welcomed the move, noting that clearly defined protection zones can play a crucial role in preserving wetlands, controlling erosion, and maintaining water quality. However, they have also stressed the importance of strict enforcement to ensure that regulations are not diluted over time.
The government is expected to notify detailed guidelines outlining permissible and restricted activities within these zones. Once implemented, the measures could have long-term implications for development patterns in Goa, particularly in areas close to the riverbanks.
