India is poised to dominate US markets as the Trump administration’s steep tariffs on China, Canada, and Mexico—set at 30%, 35%, and 25% respectively—open a massive window for Indian exports, according to NITI Aayog’s explosive Trade Watch Quarterly report released Monday. With a staggering $2,285.2 billion market opportunity, India is set to outshine competitors in 22 of the top 30 product categories, from minerals and fuels to apparel, electronics, plastics, furniture, and seafood.
The report highlights that India’s competitiveness will surge in 78 products, accounting for 52% of its exports to the US, while remaining steady in six categories worth $26.5 billion. Despite facing slightly higher tariffs (1-3%) in some areas, negotiable with the US, India’s edge is clear, especially in a $1,265-billion market where tariff gaps favor Indian goods over rivals. “India stands to gain big where China, Canada, and Mexico face hefty duties,” the report notes.
As India’s commerce ministry team, led by chief negotiator Rajesh Agrawal, lands in Washington for crucial talks starting Monday, the stakes are high. The four-day negotiations, ending Thursday, aim to finalize the first phase of a bilateral trade agreement (BTA) by fall 2025, targeting a doubling of bilateral trade to $500 billion by 2030. India is pushing for tariff relief on steel (50%), aluminum (50%), and autos (25%), while resisting US demands for duty concessions on dairy and agri-products. Instead, India seeks market access for labor-intensive sectors like textiles, gems, jewelry, and shrimp.

The US tariff hike, initially announced on April 2 but delayed until August 1, gives India breathing room to secure a deal. With exports to the US soaring 21.78% to $17.25 billion in April-May 2025, and imports up 25.8% to $8.87 billion, India’s trade surplus and strategic positioning signal a game-changing opportunity. Will India seize this moment to redefine its global trade dominance.
