In a chilling tale of deception and domestic tragedy, a 38-year-old woman from Assam's Guwahati has been arrested for allegedly murdering her husband and burying his body in their backyard — then telling neighbors he had left for work in Kerala.
The accused, Rahima Khatun, reportedly killed her husband Sabiyal Rehman, also 38, following a violent domestic altercation on June 26 at their home in Joymati Nagar, Pandu. Rehman, a scrap dealer, was allegedly intoxicated during the fight that turned fatal.
Instead of alerting authorities or family, Rahima dug a five-foot pit within the premises and buried her husband’s body, according to Guwahati police.

To cover her tracks, she told acquaintances that her husband had gone to Kerala for work. But as suspicions grew, she abruptly fled the house, citing illness and a hospital visit.
The secret unraveled when Rehman’s brother filed a missing person complaint on July 12. Just a day later, Rahima surrendered at Jalukbari police station and confessed to the murder, citing a “massive brawl” between the couple that night.
“Both had attacked each other. He was intoxicated. After he died, she panicked and buried the body in a pit about five feet deep,” said Padmanav Baruah, Deputy Commissioner of Police, Guwahati (West).
Police later exhumed the decomposed body in the presence of forensic experts and a magistrate. A forensic investigation is underway.
Authorities now suspect Rahima did not act alone.
“It’s unlikely one woman could dig such a large pit alone. We believe others may have helped and are investigating further,” Baruah added.
The couple had been married for 15 years and shared two children. As Assam reels from the shocking revelation, the case has sparked debate over domestic violence, hidden abuse, and the dark lengths some will go to conceal the truth.
Kerala was just the cover. The real story lay buried at home.
