Several women in Balrampur, Uttar Pradesh, who were allegedly converted to Islam by Jalaluddin, alias Chhangur Baba, have reported receiving death threats after returning to Hinduism through a Vishwa Hindu Raksha Parishad (VHP) ‘Ghar Wapsi’ program on July 3. The Uttar Pradesh Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) arrested Chhangur Baba and his aide Neetu, alias Nasreen, on July 5 for running an organized religious conversion network targeting Hindu and non-Muslim communities.
One woman, speaking to reporters, recounted meeting Chhangur Baba in 2019 after being introduced to a man posing as “Amit,” later revealed as Abu Ansari. She described an unsettling environment where women were brainwashed, claiming Chhangur facilitated around 5,000 conversions without financial incentives. Another woman alleged she was coerced into marrying a Muslim man as part of a scheme to “make India an Islamic country by 2047.” Both women reported ongoing threats via social media and letters sent by speed post since reverting to Hinduism.
Gopal Rai, international president of Vishwa Hindu Raksha Parishad, stated that he approached Gomti Nagar Police Station to file a complaint about the threats but was ignored. He demanded security for himself and the reconverted women. Authorities have also arrested Chhangur’s son Mehboob and another associate, Naveen alias Jamaluddin, while demolishing illegal structures linked to Chhangur on July 9.
