A local court in Sonbhadra sentenced 21-year-old Suresh Kumar to 20 years of rigorous imprisonment for repeatedly raping a minor girl under the false promise of marriage. Additional Sessions Judge and Special POCSO Judge Amit Veer Singh also imposed a Rs 10,000 fine, with Rs 8,000 directed to the survivor and an additional one-month sentence if the fine remains unpaid.
The case stemmed from a complaint filed on March 13, 2021, by the survivor, a resident of a village under Jugail police station. She alleged that Suresh, from Kharkhara village, sexually assaulted her multiple times over a year, luring her with promises of marriage and providing her with a mobile phone to arrange meetings. On March 7, 2021, he allegedly threatened to kill her if she continued to contact him, prompting her to report the abuse.
Following the complaint, police registered a case, investigated, and filed a chargesheet with sufficient evidence. The court’s verdict underscores the severity of the crime under the POCSO Act, aiming to deliver justice to the survivor and deter such offenses. The ruling reflects ongoing efforts to address sexual violence against minors, amid rising public concern over such cases in Uttar Pradesh.
