Former Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari was laid to rest in his northern hometown on Tuesday, with thousands lining the streets to pay their respects. Buhari, who died at 82 in London on Sunday following a prolonged illness, left behind a complex and divisive legacy.
President Bola Tinubu and regional leaders, including Senegal’s President Bassirou Faye, attended the burial. Faye described Buhari as a “towering figure in Nigerian and African politics.”
Buhari’s political career spanned decades, first as a military dictator after a 1983 coup, then as a democratically elected president from 2015 to 2023. His tenure faced criticism for health challenges, controversial economic policies, human rights issues, and rising insecurity.
