A 55-year-old woman’s death following bariatric surgery at Nutima Hospital in Meerut has ignited a firestorm of controversy, with her family accusing the hospital and surgeon of gross negligence. The tragedy, which unfolded on Tuesday, led to chaos at the hospital as furious relatives demanded answers, prompting police and health officials to intervene.
Rajni Gupta, a Sadar Bazar resident and wife of businessman Brajmohan Gupta, underwent weight-loss surgery on July 11, lured by a social media ad, her family claims. Weighing 123 kg, Rajni opted for the procedure alongside her 26-year-old daughter, Shivani, who was also around 120 kg. Dr. Rishi Singhal, the bariatric surgeon, allegedly promised a staggering 30 kg weight loss within 24 hours. While Shivani’s surgery succeeded, Rajni’s condition deteriorated rapidly.
The family alleges Rajni suffered severe abdominal pain post-surgery, which doctors dismissed. An X-ray on July 13 reportedly revealed an abdominal leak from the surgery, causing a fatal infection. Rajni passed away on Tuesday, with her family claiming she received inadequate care. Brajmohan Gupta filed a complaint at the Medical Police Station, though no FIR has been registered yet. The case has been forwarded to the Chief Medical Officer for investigation.

Dr. Singhal vehemently denies negligence, stating Rajni and Shivani approached him after attending a December 2024 event showcasing his successful patients. He claims Rajni had multiple health issues, including diabetes, hypertension, and cardiac concerns, and was informed of the procedure’s risks. Despite a successful surgery, Rajni suffered a heart attack on July 13 and died despite ICU efforts, he said.
The incident has raised alarm over the safety of bariatric surgeries, with the investigation ongoing as the community reels from the loss.
