A Delta Air Lines flight approaching New York’s LaGuardia Airport received a security warning about a possible “rocket launcher” attack shortly before landing on Tuesday night, but authorities quickly determined that the threat was not credible. The alert was issued while Delta Flight 2604, operating from Detroit to New York, was on its final approach to the airport.

The warning came from air traffic controllers after an anonymous tip was reported to authorities. At around 8:27 p.m. local time, LaGuardia Tower issued a MANPAD alert, referring to a possible threat involving a man-portable air defence system, a type of shoulder-fired surface-to-air missile. The alert instructed aircraft to use extreme caution while approaching the airport.

According to recorded air traffic communications, the pilot of Delta Flight 2604 asked for clarification after hearing the unfamiliar term. The air traffic controller explained that the report involved a possible rocket launcher. Shortly afterwards, Port Authority police reviewed the information and determined within about a minute that the threat was not credible.

Following the assessment, the controller informed the Delta crew that no response was required and confirmed that authorities had classified the report as a non-credible threat. The aircraft continued its approach and landed safely at LaGuardia Airport without any disruption. Officials said no other aircraft were affected and airport operations continued normally.

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and Port Authority authorities did not reveal details about the person who made the anonymous report or the reason behind it. Officials said all security threats are treated seriously until investigations are completed. MANPAD alerts are rare at commercial airports in the United States and typically trigger immediate precautionary procedures.

The incident comes months after another aviation communication issue at LaGuardia involving confusion over radio frequencies. In March, a Delta Connection flight operated by Republic Airways mistakenly contacted John F. Kennedy International Airport’s control tower while approaching LaGuardia. The aircraft was instructed to contact the correct tower, carried out a go-around procedure and landed safely after a short delay. Authorities also reviewed that incident separately.
