Vice-President C.P. Radhakrishnan said on Sunday that good governance plays a crucial role in maintaining investor confidence and public trust, describing it as an essential but often unseen foundation of a strong economy. He was speaking at the 58th Foundation Day celebrations of the Institute of Company Secretaries of India (ICSI) at Bharat Mandapam in New Delhi. He also congratulated members of the organisation on the occasion.
Radhakrishnan described Company Secretaries as important custodians of corporate governance and said their responsibilities extend beyond ensuring regulatory compliance. He linked effective governance with the expectations of both citizens and investors, noting that taxpayers look for accountable administration while investors depend on companies to protect their interests through transparent and responsible practices.
The Vice-President also addressed the growing influence of artificial intelligence, data analytics and changing business models on corporate decision-making. While technology can change how information is processed and decisions are supported, he stressed that values such as accountability, transparency, integrity and responsibility continue to depend on human judgement. He urged Company Secretaries to safeguard the legal and ethical foundations of businesses as corporate practices evolve.

He further said strong institutions and sound governance would be as important as physical and digital infrastructure in India's efforts to build a developed economy. Radhakrishnan called on ICSI to continue contributing to the country's governance framework and to support the growth of a strong, self-reliant and developed India by 2047. He also said India should seek to become the world's largest economy to strengthen its ability to protect its own interests.
During the event, the Vice-President launched the MSME Compliance Calendar 2027 and acknowledged ICSI initiatives supporting micro, small and medium enterprises as well as start-ups. He also appreciated the institute's contributions to the National Defence Fund under the Shaheed Ki Beti initiative and the Armed Forces Flag Day Fund of the Ministry of Defence, highlighting the organisation's wider social and institutional contributions.
Radhakrishnan's address placed corporate governance within the broader context of India's economic development and institutional trust. He urged the ICSI fraternity to continue upholding the confidence placed in the profession while adapting to changes brought by technology and new business models. The event marked 58 years of ICSI's institutional journey and its expanding role in promoting responsible corporate practices.
