A mob of around 80 individuals, allegedly from a Hindutva outfit, stormed the home of Kargil war veteran Hakimuddin Shaikh’s family in Pune’s Chandannagar area at midnight on Saturday, accusing them of being Bangladeshi nationals. The group, chanting “Jai Shree Ram,” demanded Aadhaar cards and tried to force family members, including women and children, to the police station, claiming their documents were fake.
Irshad Shaikh, a family member, said the mob ignored their 60-year residency in Pune and the military service of multiple relatives, including Hakimuddin, a retired havildar from the Kargil War, and two uncles who served in the 1965 and 1971 India-Pakistan wars. “They hurled abuses and refused to listen,” Irshad alleged, noting that two individuals claiming to be plainclothes police were present but did nothing.
Pune Police Commissioner Amitesh Kumar confirmed a case was registered for unlawful assembly against the mob after they raised slogans outside the Shaikh residence. Following a police control room tip about “Bangladeshi nationals,” officers intervened and verified the family’s documents, finding no illegality. Kumar said most police at the scene were in uniform, though some may have been in plainclothes, and further action may be taken as statements are recorded.

The family, supported by social activist Rahul Dambale, met Kumar on Wednesday, demanding justice. Hakimuddin, now residing in Uttar Pradesh, condemned the incident, vowing to seek an explanation from authorities for the harassment of his family, who have deep roots in Pune and a proud military legacy.
