Filmmaker and choreographer Farah Khan has described hosting Lock Upp Season 2 alongside Riteish Deshmukh as her “dream job”, saying the reality show allowed her to combine storytelling and entertainment with her interest in unscripted television. Speaking at FICCI Frames, Farah also discussed how the experience influenced her relationship with her children and their teenage friends.
Farah revealed that she had not watched the first season of Lock Upp because it streamed on Alt Balaji and she did not have the app at the time. However, she said she and Riteish were both “reality show junkies” and enjoyed the opportunity to host the second season. According to Farah, entertaining audiences and keeping them engaged has always been central to her approach to filmmaking, television and YouTube.
She said there were several suggestions about how the hosts should conduct themselves on the show, but eventually both she and Riteish developed their own styles. Farah said she wanted to represent the audience while interacting with contestants, even if that sometimes made her appear biased. She also praised Riteish’s approach, saying he would occasionally stop her when she became too angry while confronting contestants.

Farah said the show stood out to her because it explored human nature, secrets and personal experiences within an entertainment format. She described the season as the best reality show she had worked on and highlighted the personal stories shared by contestants. Her comments reflected her view that the programme went beyond tasks and eliminations by bringing contestants’ individual experiences into the format.
The experience also had an unexpected impact on Farah’s relationship with younger people around her. She said hosting Lock Upp made her “cool” with her children and their friends, explaining that teenage girls would approach her in public and identify themselves as “Lock Upp pagloos”. Farah said this response helped create a new connection with her children’s generation.
Lock Upp returned for its second season after a four-year gap in a revamped format on Netflix, with Farah Khan and Riteish Deshmukh serving as jailers after Kangana Ranaut hosted the first season. The season featured celebrities and public figures competing in tasks and facing eliminations while their personal lives formed part of the show's narrative. Shreya Kalra emerged as the winner, with Shivangi Joshi finishing as runner-up.
