Bollywood actor Arjun Kapoor has approached the Delhi High Court seeking legal protection of his personality rights, alleging misuse of his identity through artificial intelligence-generated content, deepfakes, and explicit material circulating online. The case was heard on Wednesday by Justice Tushar Rao Gedela, with the actor represented by advocate Pravin Anand.
During the proceedings, Arjun’s legal counsel informed the court that several instances of alleged misuse included morphed images and AI-generated visuals that portrayed the actor in objectionable and inappropriate contexts. The counsel argued that such content goes beyond satire or harmless creativity and directly distorts the actor’s identity. He further stated that no individual, including a public figure, would consent to such portrayals.
The plea also highlighted that Arjun’s likeness had been allegedly used without permission across various online platforms, including manipulated images and unauthorised merchandise. The argument emphasised that the rapid rise of AI tools has made it easier to create realistic but misleading content, raising serious concerns about privacy and reputational harm for public personalities.

However, the court observed that not all online content involving celebrities can be restricted under personality rights law. Justice Gedela noted that public figures operate under constant public attention and that a distinction must be made between defamatory content and general expressions, satire, or creative output. The court also cautioned that overly broad restrictions could interfere with established legal precedents.
The judge further remarked that only content that is clearly disparaging or defamatory may warrant legal intervention, suggesting that blanket restrictions may not be appropriate. A detailed order on interim relief is expected after further review of the submissions made during the hearing.
Arjun’s petition adds to a growing number of similar cases filed by celebrities in India seeking protection against unauthorised use of their identity in the digital space. Courts have previously granted relief in such matters to several public figures, including actors, musicians, and sports personalities, reflecting increasing legal scrutiny over AI-generated misuse and digital impersonation.
