West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has firmly rejected claims of a ban on beloved snacks like samosas and jalebis, clarifying that her government will not enforce any such restrictions. The statement follows reports suggesting the Union health ministry urged ministries to display sugar and oil content on snacks like samosas, kachoris, burgers, and gulab jamuns to promote healthier lifestyles and tackle obesity.
In a post on X, Banerjee stated, “Some media claim samosas and jalebis are banned based on health ministry instructions. This is not a West Bengal government directive. We won’t meddle in people’s food choices. These snacks are loved across states, and we respect that.”
The health ministry’s advisory also proposed printing health warnings on official stationery to raise awareness about obesity and non-communicable diseases. It highlighted snacks like french fries, pizzas, and vadapavs on an “Oil Board” and sugary items like soft drinks and pastries on a “Sugar Board.”

The move triggered a political backlash in West Bengal. TMC spokesperson Kunal Ghosh labeled the advisory a “fatwa,” asserting, “Under Mamata Banerjee’s leadership, Bengal rejects such dictates. People are free to enjoy their snacks as long as quality is ensured.” He questioned, “Are samosas and jalebis like cigarettes that need warnings?”
Banerjee and Ghosh emphasized that West Bengal will not interfere with personal food preferences, ensuring residents can savor their favorite treats without restrictions.
