The Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), led by Tarique Rahman, has positioned India-related issues at the center of its foreign policy vision in its recently released election manifesto, signaling a more assertive approach to frontier management and cross-border diplomacy if the party returns to power.
While the manifesto does not explicitly mention India in its bullet points, it highlights flashpoints that have long shaped Dhaka-New Delhi relations, including cross-border shootings, “push-ins,” and unresolved river-water sharing agreements. Analysts say these issues, deeply rooted in historical and geopolitical sensitivities, underscore the BNP’s intention to project a strong stance on protecting Bangladesh’s sovereignty.
The manifesto frames external relations under what the party calls the “Bangladesh Before All” doctrine, emphasizing principles of “equality and self-dignity” alongside the slogan, “Friend Yes, Master No.” According to the document, Bangladesh would respect the internal affairs of other nations while firmly opposing external interference within its own borders.

Particular attention is paid to recurring tensions along the India-Bangladesh frontier. The BNP promises to take “a strict position” to curb border killings, prevent unauthorized “push-ins,” and halt smuggling—long-standing grievances that have caused friction in bilateral relations. The language reflects widespread domestic concern over human rights violations and border security lapses.
River-water sharing, another sensitive topic in Dhaka-New Delhi relations, also features prominently in the manifesto. While the text does not specify treaties or rivers, the emphasis suggests the BNP intends to push for stronger protections of Bangladesh’s water rights, a recurring source of negotiation between the two neighbors.
Political analysts note that by highlighting these India-linked issues, the BNP is appealing to nationalistic sentiments and asserting a foreign policy posture centered on sovereignty and dignity. Observers say the manifesto’s approach could influence bilateral talks and regional diplomacy if the party forms the next government.
