Martin Scorsese is producing a documentary ‘Aldeas — A New Story’ chronicling the recently deceased Pope Francis’ work with cinema in the global educational movement, featuring conversations between himself and the late pontiff.
The document will feature what is noted as the Pope's final in-depth on-camera interview for a documentary. It focuses on Scholas Occurrentes, an international non-profit organization founded by Pope Francis in 2013. The organization promotes a "Culture of Encounter" among youth worldwide, with a significant emphasis on filmmaking through its Aldeas initiative. The documentary will highlight young filmmakers from Indonesia, Gambia, and Italy, showcasing their participation in the Aldeas program and their creation of short films.
Sikelia Productions, Scorsese's production company, in collaboration with Aldeas Scholas Film, announced the documentary, emphasizing its message that creativity serves not only as a form of expression but also as a pathway to hope and transformation.

Reflecting on the project, Scorsese expressed the importance of cross-cultural dialogue and understanding through storytelling: "Now, more than ever, we need to talk to each other, listen to one another cross-culturally. Cinema is the best medium to exchange ideas with respect while preserving cultural identity."
The collaboration between Scorsese and Pope Francis evolved through multiple meetings over the years, influencing Scorsese's cinematic works like "The Last Temptation of Christ" and "Silence." With Pope Francis's recent passing, the documentary stands as a testament to his vision and legacy in promoting global dialogue and cultural exchange through the arts.
No release date has been set for "Aldeas - A New Story" as yet.
