Cristiano Ronaldo’s future with Portugal has come under fresh scrutiny after the veteran forward left the national team’s training camp in Copenhagen ahead of the Nations League match against Denmark. The 41-year-old announced his departure after a press conference by coach Jorge Jesus, who had said Ronaldo would not start the upcoming match. Ronaldo said he had spoken with Portuguese Football Federation president Pedro Proença before deciding to leave the camp.
Ronaldo said he would explain the reasons for his departure to the Portuguese public at a later stage. The Portuguese Football Federation confirmed that he had left the camp but provided no further details, saying the remaining 24 players would continue preparations for the Denmark fixture. The sudden exit has led to questions about whether Ronaldo will continue representing Portugal, although neither the player nor the federation has announced his international retirement.
The development followed Ronaldo’s absence from Portugal’s 2-1 Nations League victory over Norway, when he remained on the bench after warming up. Jesus had acknowledged that Ronaldo was unhappy about not being brought onto the field but denied that there was a serious dispute between them. The coach said the rules applied equally to all players and maintained that team selection decisions were his responsibility.

Ronaldo’s departure could also have disciplinary consequences. Reuters reported that the Portuguese federation’s regulations allow a player who leaves or fails to appear for national-team activities without justification to face a suspension of between one and six months, in addition to a fine. It remains unclear whether Ronaldo’s decision, which was communicated to federation officials, will be considered justified under those rules. The federation had not immediately provided further comment on the issue.
Ronaldo remains Portugal’s record international goalscorer and has previously indicated that his professional career is approaching its final stage. He has also continued to pursue a career milestone of 1,000 goals. His latest departure, however, does not by itself confirm the end of his international career. For now, Portugal is preparing for its Nations League fixture against Denmark without its captain, while Ronaldo’s promised explanation could provide further clarity about his decision and his plans with the national team.
