Meghalaya Police has deployed around 1,500 personnel and put elaborate security and traffic arrangements in place for Union Home Minister Amit Shah’s two-day visit to Shillong on October 4 and 5, officials said on Thursday.
East Khasi Hills Superintendent of Police Vivek Syiem said preparations for the visit had been completed, with traffic management identified as a key challenge for authorities. The police have prepared arrangements covering important routes and venues associated with Shah’s programme. The SP (Traffic) will issue advisories informing commuters about routes to avoid and the timings of restrictions during VIP movement.
Around 1,500 personnel will be deployed across key locations and movement corridors linked to the Home Minister’s visit. Syiem said tactical teams and personnel from different police units had also been brought in as part of the security arrangements. Authorities have urged commuters to follow traffic advisories and cooperate with personnel deployed during the programme to minimise disruption.

Shah’s visit is centred on the formal presentation of the Presidential Colours to the Meghalaya Police in Shillong. The Presidential Colours are among the highest honours conferred on a police or military organisation in recognition of distinguished service. Syiem described the honour as a source of pride for the Meghalaya Police and said the force is among the few police organisations in the Northeast to have received the distinction.
The police chief attributed the recognition to the sacrifice, integrity and dedication of personnel in carrying out their duties. He also said the Meghalaya Police would continue working to improve professionalism and service delivery while maintaining integrity in policing. The upcoming ceremony is expected to be a significant occasion for the state police force.
With heightened security arrangements planned across Shillong, authorities are expected to issue detailed traffic advisories ahead of the visit. The advisories will help residents and commuters plan their journeys around the restrictions and routes affected by VIP movement. Police have also appealed to the public to cooperate with security personnel during the Home Minister’s programme.
