Cristiano Ronaldo's sudden departure from Portugal's national team camp ahead of the Nations League group game against Denmark has triggered speculation over whether his international career could be coming to an end. Portuguese media outlet O Jogo reported that Ronaldo not only left the training camp but also departed the team hotel in Copenhagen. The report claimed that his decision not to return to the Portugal squad was “irreversible”, raising the possibility that the group-stage match against Wales on September 25 could have been his final appearance for his country.
Ronaldo had earlier confirmed his departure from the Portugal camp on social media, saying the decision followed a conversation with Portuguese Football Federation president Pedro Proença. The development came after head coach Jorge Jesus confirmed that Ronaldo would not start against Denmark. Ronaldo said he had decided to leave the training camp following the coach's press conference and his discussion with the FPF president, but did not disclose the full reasons behind his decision. He said he would explain what motivated his departure “in due time” and wished Portugal and his teammates luck.
The 41-year-old forward has not confirmed that he is retiring from international football. His decision to leave the camp, however, has raised questions about whether he will return for the later stages of the Nations League. Ronaldo has previously spoken about the final phase of his playing career, saying earlier this year that the ongoing Saudi Pro League season would be the last of his professional career. He had also indicated that the 2026 World Cup would be his final World Cup, although he had not publicly specified when he intended to end his career with Portugal.

Ronaldo's recent involvement with Portugal has also been limited. He played only once for the national team following the World Cup, featuring against Wales in Lisbon on September 25. He endured a difficult outing, with five of his seven attempts missing the target, while another second-half effort was ruled out following a VAR review. Ronaldo was substituted in the 67th minute as Portugal continued its Nations League campaign.
Jesus had also left Ronaldo out of Portugal's starting lineup for the match against Norway, with Goncalo Ramos taking his place as Portugal secured a 2-1 victory. The coach's decision to leave Ronaldo on the bench again against Denmark was followed by the forward's departure from the camp, although the precise circumstances behind the disagreement have not been publicly detailed by Ronaldo.
For now, Ronaldo's own statement stops short of confirming an international retirement, while the Portuguese media report about an “irreversible” decision has intensified speculation about his future with the national team. Ronaldo has scored 979 career goals and remains a central figure in Portugal's football history, but his next steps with the national side will depend on whether he returns after the current dispute and on what he reveals about his decision to leave the camp.
