Former India spinner Ravichandran Ashwin has weighed in on the controversial catch that dominated discussion during the IPL 2026 clash between Gujarat Titans and Royal Challengers Bangalore, backing the on-field decision and calling it a fair dismissal. The incident involved Jason Holder’s low catch to remove Rajat Patidar, a moment that triggered visible frustration from Virat Kohli and the RCB camp.
The controversy unfolded when Patidar top-edged a pull shot off Arshad Khan toward deep square leg. Holder sprinted in from near the boundary and completed a diving, low catch close to the turf. RCB players appeared unconvinced, believing the ball may have touched the ground during the attempt, while Kohli was seen animatedly discussing the matter with the fourth umpire.
Despite the protest, the decision stood, and Patidar had to depart. Speaking later on his YouTube channel, Ashwin explained that Holder’s large hands may have created an optical illusion for viewers. He said the ball can appear visible between the fingers without necessarily making contact with the ground, adding that Holder may have wrapped his hands around it securely.

Ashwin said fan loyalties naturally shape how such moments are viewed, suggesting RCB supporters would feel hard done by, while Gujarat Titans fans would see it as clean. However, he added that from a neutral perspective, the dismissal looked legitimate. His comments sought to settle debate around one of the most talked-about moments of the match.
The wicket proved significant in the flow of the game. Royal Challengers Bengaluru, after a promising start led by Virat Kohli, suffered a collapse and were bowled out for 155 in 19.2 overs. Arshad Khan starred with three wickets, while Rashid Khan and Holder also made key contributions with the ball to restrict the visitors.
In reply, Gujarat Titans launched an aggressive chase through Shubman Gill and Jos Buttler, who provided a rapid opening stand. Though wickets fell in the middle overs, Rahul Tewatia and Rashid Khan guided the side home comfortably, securing a four-wicket win. The result strengthened Gujarat’s campaign, while the disputed catch remained the central talking point after the match.
