Punjab Kings (PBKS) scripted history in the Indian Premier League (IPL) by defending the lowest-ever total, beating Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) by 16 runs in a nail-biting clash on Tuesday.
PBKS, bowled out for a paltry 111—the season’s third-lowest score—staged a remarkable comeback to bundle out KKR for 95 while chasing 112, surpassing Chennai Super Kings’ 2009 record of defending 116.
KKR seemed in control at 71/3 after 9.1 overs, led by Angkrish Raghuvanshi’s 37 and Ajinkya Rahane’s 17. However, a dramatic collapse saw them lose seven wickets for just 24 runs in six overs.

Leg-spinner Yuzczekndra Chahal was the hero, claiming 4/28, including the scalps of Rahane, Raghuvanshi, Rinku Singh (2), and Ramandeep Singh (0)—the latter two on consecutive balls in the 12th over. Marco Jansen’s fiery 3/17, alongside single wickets from Xavier Bartlett, Glenn Maxwell, and Arshdeep Singh, sealed KKR’s fate in 15.1 overs.
Earlier, PBKS’ decision to bat first backfired as KKR’s bowlers dominated. Harshit Rana (3/25), Varun Chakaravarthy (2/21), and Sunil Narine (2/14) exploited reckless batting, with only Priyansh Arya (22), Prabhsimran Singh (30), and Shashank Singh (18) showing resistance. Ramandeep Singh’s three catches, including a stunning dive, bolstered KKR’s fielding.
KKR’s chase faltered early with Narine (5) and Quinton de Kock (2) falling quickly. Despite Rahane’s six in the powerplay, Chahal’s introduction turned the tide, triggering a collapse that Andre Russell’s brief 16-run burst couldn’t salvage.
PBKS’ grit and Chahal’s magic delivered an unforgettable victory, redefining IPL’s record books.
