India captain Shubman Gill has indicated that the team is likely to move away from extensive experimentation as it builds towards the 2027 ODI World Cup. His comments came after India lost the third ODI against the West Indies, despite winning the three-match series 2-1. The series exposed concerns in India's bowling attack, with the West Indies scoring more than 350 runs in two matches and chasing down a target above 350 in the final game.
India had used the series to give opportunities to players such as Auqib Nabi and Anshul Kamboj, with several frontline players unavailable because of their Asian Games commitments. Nabi conceded 84 runs in the second ODI, while Kamboj went for 82 in the third match. Their performances have raised questions about their immediate prospects, although Gill's comments suggested that both players could still remain part of the wider World Cup discussion.
Speaking at the post-match press conference, Gill said India now needed to identify and regularly play the combination it intends to take into the World Cup. He indicated that the team would prefer to have its key players available in upcoming series and begin building familiarity with the preferred lineup. Gill also said that the team would discuss selection decisions with the selectors while keeping the World Cup in mind.

Gill, however, stopped short of ruling Nabi and Kamboj out of contention. He described both players as being likely to remain in the mix, particularly because of the balance they can provide. Kamboj's ability to contribute with the bat at No. 8 was highlighted as an important factor, while the opportunity to test the duo came after Prasidh Krishna's absence created room for experimentation during the series.
The India captain also acknowledged that the pressure of international cricket can make it difficult for inexperienced players to immediately produce their best performances. He said it was harsh to judge the two players solely on their results in the series and hoped they would learn from their mistakes and future opportunities. Gill's remarks therefore offered some encouragement to Nabi and Kamboj even as India prepares to settle on a more consistent combination.
India's 2-1 series victory came despite significant issues with its bowling performance, making the upcoming matches important for establishing greater stability. With the 2027 ODI World Cup approaching, the team will have to balance opportunities for emerging players with the need to develop a settled squad. Gill's comments suggest that future selections will increasingly focus on players whose skills best fit India's preferred World Cup combination.
