The DP World ILT20 is entering its fifth season with a continued focus on strengthening cricket in the United Arab Emirates (UAE), according to league CEO David White. He said the tournament’s biggest priority remains developing local talent and providing UAE players with opportunities to compete alongside some of the world’s leading cricketers. White highlighted the league’s growing presence on the UAE sporting calendar and said its success should not only be measured by commercial partnerships, franchise support and broadcasting deals but also by its contribution to the country’s cricket ecosystem.

“It’s pleasing to see the DP World ILT20 firmly established on the UAE sporting calendar. We have built a strong and sustainable competition, but our ambition has always been to contribute to the long-term development of cricket in the UAE,” White said. The ILT20 has become an important component of the Emirates Cricket Board’s high-performance programme, offering domestic players exposure to international-level competition. White said the league allows emerging UAE cricketers to learn from experienced international players and improve their skills in a competitive environment.

A key feature of the tournament is the mandatory inclusion of UAE and Associate Members’ players in every franchise squad. The rule was introduced to ensure that local and emerging players receive meaningful opportunities rather than being included only as squad members. “Creating opportunities for Associate Members players has always been central to how we set the league up. We wanted talented cricketers from emerging nations to play meaningful roles rather than just make up a squad,” White said.

He added that regular exposure against top-level players helps accelerate the development of cricketers from Associate nations and strengthens the overall standard of international cricket beyond the traditional powerhouse teams. The league has attracted several international stars and franchise investments since its launch, helping raise the profile of cricket in the UAE. However, White said the long-term objective remains building a sustainable pathway for local players and improving the country’s cricket infrastructure. The UAE has emerged as a major cricket hub in recent years, hosting international matches, global tournaments and franchise-based leagues.

The ILT20 has added another platform for players from the region to gain experience at a higher level. As the tournament prepares for its fifth edition, organisers are aiming to further expand its impact while maintaining a balance between international entertainment and domestic cricket development. For White, the league’s greatest achievement will be measured by how effectively it contributes to the growth of UAE cricket and creates opportunities for the next generation of players from the country and other emerging cricket nations.
