Actor Vijay is emerging as one of the most closely watched actor-turned-politicians in Tamil Nadu ahead of the 2026 Assembly election results. His political journey has been long in the making, with early signs seen through his fan network, Vijay Makkal Iyakkam, and his socially themed films that often highlighted issues like corruption, farmers’ distress, and social justice. In 2024, he formally launched his party Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), declaring that politics is a “sacred service” and confirming that his final film would mark his full-time entry into politics.
Tamil Nadu has a strong tradition of film stars entering politics, with leaders like MGR and J Jayalalithaa becoming Chief Ministers. However, many others such as Sivaji Ganesan, Kamal Haasan, and Vijaykanth did not achieve similar success, making Vijay’s political path uncertain. Analysts believe he is attempting to follow the MGR model, but exit polls suggest a possible advantage for the ruling DMK, while still giving TVK a chance to emerge as a significant force.
Vijay’s campaign focuses on youth, women, and fisherfolk, offering promises such as education loans, financial aid for women, housing support, and welfare schemes for fishing communities. His party has also taken a strong anti-BJP and anti-DMK stance, refusing alliances with either side and positioning itself as an independent alternative. This strategy is aimed at attracting voters who are disillusioned with traditional Dravidian politics.

Despite his popularity, Vijay’s political career has already faced challenges, including criticism over organisational readiness after a tragic stampede at one of his rallies that killed 41 people. He has also faced scrutiny over leadership decisions and public conduct during crises. Still, his large Gen Z fan base and strong media presence continue to give him political visibility.
With voting already completed and results expected on May 4, Vijay’s first electoral test is seen as a major moment that will determine whether he becomes a lasting political force in Tamil Nadu or follows the uncertain path of other film stars who entered politics before him.
